FWST: Patterson says TCU was tired, but didn't quit against Oklahoma State

By Stefan Stevenson
sstevenson@star-telegram.com

Maybe it was just Oklahoma State "turning up the knob," as TCU coach Gary Patterson called it, that made the Horned Frogs look like a slower team than they are in the second half Saturday.

It could be that the Frogs (5-3, 2-3 in the Big 12) ran out of gas while the Cowboys refueled and motored on past, outscoring TCU 27-0 in the second half for a 36-14 win.

To that end, the Frogs did not practice Sunday evening. Last week Patterson cut Wednesday's practice short.
TCU plays at No. 21 West Virginia (5-2, 2-2), at 2 p.m. Saturday at Milan Puskar Stadium. The Mountaineers had a bye week after losing to Kansas State 55-14 on Oct. 20.

"We're a tired football team," Patterson said Sunday. "We were tired [Saturday] and I think we're still tired." ...

Injury update
Trevone Boykin's status for West Virginia is unknown after he sustained a knee injury late against Oklahoma State.
Gary Patterson declined to give any information on the extent of the freshman's injury or whether he'll be available against the Mountaineers.

Patterson said offensive lineman Blaize Foltz is likely to start Saturday. Foltz sprained an ankle in the first half last week against Texas Tech and played about 15 plays against Oklahoma State.

Running back Matthew Tucker did not play much in the second half Saturday because of an injury, and may not play at West Virginia, Patterson said.

Brandon Carter, who was injured a month ago, did not play at Oklahoma State and Patterson said Carter is doubtful for this Saturday. There's no update on the status of defensive end Stansly Maponga, who dressed Saturday but did not play.

Gary said as much, without saying as much.

It sounds like TB2's injury is fairly serious, since CGP wouldn't comment on it, while he offered greater detail on other injuries.

That's pure speculation on my part, but we may well be looking at Matt Brown playing QB in Morgantown, this weekend.

Go Frogs!

The rumor out there is that he's getting an MRI this morning as it appears the injury is to his knee, not ankle.

Seeing how coach has handled injuries this season I have a bad feeling about Boykin. I hope the young man gets good news from the MRI today.

It seems that when Gary is reticent to comment on an

injury..the results generally have negative implications.

Yeah it sure sounds like he's doneskies. He may be a case of keeping him out due to that position being stacked. If that position suddenly got thin, he could probably come back.

As great of a player as he is, no need to risk serious injury with the depth at that position.

Unless the NCAA mandates something, it is usually the conference itself that has the ultimate decision on weather an in-conference game takes place.

Ultimately, it will come down to how much damage there is left behind that would hamper a game taking place.

The hurricane will be gone by Friday. In fact, we played Stanford one year in worse conditions that what is foretasted for Morgan town Friday and Saturday. Teams have traveled an played at the beginning and ending post/prior days to a hurricane many times - including us and SFU. I work in the Airline industry and flights are probably going to resume normal schedules for the East Coast by Thursday morning if not late Wednesday barring any flood/wind damage to the airports.

If you really read between the lines, coach P is essentially asking the Big 12 for a bye and presenting a fairly good case. I'll agree that I don't blame him at all.... He may get it depending on damage sustained. If not, I don't see any reason they would delay the game.

Honestly? If I were WVU, I would want one just as bad....

Does WVU have an indoor facility?

Tired? Not sure I buy that. Young, inexperienced, outplayed. OK. But tired?

I hope we don't start making excuses for getting our butts beat. There are legit reasons why we have lost this year, we don't need to start making others up. Nobody's job is in jeopardy.

Hopefully the Boykin injury is not serious. I just want to win one more game to get to a bowl this season.

The game will most certainly be played. The real question

remains, will we have enough people available at the key

positions to make the contest competitive?

HCGP believes in very physical practices. He has been quoted as saying that he wants to practice so hard that the games seem easy. He works the players very hard. There is more to it than just the games.
