Ok...so every state agency is to try and cut 5% and the Governor is living large on the govt teat while the Mansion is being rebuilt. Why, if the tea party movement isn't left or right, aren't they calling him out on this bloat?.....and why aren't the local tarrant tea party folks calling out elected officials doing similar stuff right under their noses?

What the heck are you complaining about? Renting the gov some digs while the state's burned out mansion is rebuilt? You sound like you're trying to imply that the gov moving to more reasonable lodging would negate the necessity for the state to cut its overall budget by 5%. That's ridiculous.

BTW, the Tea Parties are far more focused on DC at this point. I'm sure the states will eventually come under the magnifying glass.

The point being the Governor's Mansion has 2700 sq ft of private living space and costs the state no money for rent. Obviously, a rent-free temporary residence is not possible, but one would think a fiscally conservative person would have looked for something a little less extravagant than a 6300 sq ft, 5 bedroom house. Just an observation.

Here's a nifty time saver. Make up the posters of Governor Perry with a Hitler mustache now, so you have them when you focus on the state level. tongue.gif

If the old governor's mansion had not burned, just how much do you think it would have rented for in that location? A big old antique mansion in downtown Austin next to the capital? Wanna bet the value of that place far exceeds what the state is paying for the rent now? Norml, that is simply a political reach by the left grasping at straws trying find something that might stick. I would try maybe his pathetic effort on illegal immigration or the cervical cancer immunization stuff.

Other than making political appointments, the governor doesn't really have much to do with legislation or budgeting. The most powerful man in Texas politics is the Lieutenant Governor because he controls the floor of the Senate, determining which bills get voted on and what agendas are advanced as well as controlling the budgeting process through the Legislative Budget Board. That's why Ben Barnes was the most powerful man in Texas during his time in government (and the most powerful man outside government when he retired--and why we ended up on the outside looking in after the Big 12 raid).

So if you're upset about our budget woes, David Dewhurst is your guy, not Perry, though I'll admit that they have been working together pretty much in lockstep. But in the end, Perry can't advance anything without Dewhurst endorsing it (otherwise, Dewhurst could just keep it from ever coming up for a vote in the Senate).

No arguement there. In fact, I believe the Texas governor probably has the least power of any governor in the country.

North Carolina has the weakest governorship.

You can call it a reach by the left if you want but I can really respect folks who lead by example and I scoff at those who don't.....especially when those that don't want to preach the fiscal conservative mantra. Seven bathrooms? Listen, I know that Rick Perry is so full of sh*t that his eyes are brown but I don't think that he needs seven bathrooms to empty himself out.

And how is that relevant? You suggesting the Governor's Mansion, once rebuilt, be turned into a bed-and-breakfast? Did you actually read my post?

So much for the fiscal conservatives.

Yea what a clear misuse of almost thousands of dollars of taxpayer money that could have been spent on illegal immigrants. I cant believe Rick Perry has the audacity to stay in anything other than a donated motel 6. This jerk has saved billions of dollars and kept the state far from an economic disaster, more commonly called a "cali-for-nia" and now he thinks he has the right to live in a comfortable house while his govoners mansion is being rebuilt!! Geezz what an arrogant and blatant misuse of tax dollars. Furthermore, I heard that he was actually eating red meat! Oh my God, not only is Rick Perry a money hungry power wielding white person, he is also waging a crusade to further the abuse of innocent animals and cause the common wild cow population to become extinct. Will the atrocity ever end?

What do you guys think...too much?

6000+ sq ft and 7 bathrooms. As opposed to 2700 sq ft.

We should all be that comfortable.

It ain't about whether renting a house half the size would take care of the pending budget deficit (and I'd called 11 billion an economic disaster waiting to happen). It's about practicing what we preach. It's about being a hypocrite.

I didn't realize there was a mortgage on the White House.......

You do realize that much of that space, like the Governor's Mansion, is NOT private living space. You think if the WH burned, the government would move the President's family into a house 3 times larger?

And its missing the point anyways.

Texas is arguably the economically strongest state in the Union! Or perhaps you havent noticed the 100,000's of thousands of people who are immigrating here from other (states and countries) for jobs, low taxes a stable and affordable housing market?

If you dont like it then by all means get the hell out!

You don't understand how hard it was to get an affordable insurance policy after the Brits burned the first one down in 1813. Plus Washington Mutual stuck us with a terrible rate ...

Not arguing that.

Doesn't change the fact that the next legislature will be dealing with a big budget deficit.

I dont think its outlandish or out of the question that the Governor of our state is entitled to some privileges and luxuries he is after all the Governor.

Would you honestly expect anything less of a democrat or perhaps a Govenator?

I also don’t think that his living expenses have anything to do with the nature or political turmoil in this country and or the Tea Party Movement. Have their been any figures released on what the governor has been being charged or is paying for the temporary residence?

The level of political unrest is at a 30yr high. Im pretty sure that America is far unhappier under the current regime than the previous and this is evident in the level of organization and sophistication of the rebellion

Thanks for the heads up...just for grins I checked out the NE tarrant county tea party website and their top concern(as evidenced by their most recent post) are the proposed textbood changes and the SBOE....not really a DC issue at all.

I'm just suggesting that there might be a little willful blindness to crap that is happening in their own backyard and they might have a case of "convenient patriotism"
