As far as I can tell, coaching contracts serve only 2 purposes. #1 it outlines the coach's compensation package, #2 it gives the appearance to High School recruits that the coach will be at the program for the duration of that recruit's career (which is why most contracts are around 5 years).
Tennessee could not hire an assistant coach? How far has their program fallen?

Then why even have a contract at all?

. . . So while the brain trust is trying to figure out the schemes of the next opponent, Mack is out playing the back nine and making 5 million a year. . . . all Mack has to do is stand on the sidelines with his hands on his knees with a focused look on his face and convince everyone he knows what is going.
If fact, it is commonly known around town here in Austin that Mack puts in the hours that most successful college head coaches do.
He sold a Lake Travis house and moved into a downtown condo to cut his commuting time-- transactions made the real estate section of the newspaper because both are so lavish.
I met a gentleman that was installing a very high dollar salt-water aquarium in a friend's home, and he mentioned that he maintained a similar setup in Mack's condo. Asked if Mack spent time with his aquarium, he said "I don't think he realizes it's there".

I love your reply, you are stating no chance Mack coaches for 10+ years as if you are a friend of the program and have some special insight into the situation which you do not. Mack has it pretty good, the best recruits want to come to UT, so unlike TCU you don't have to sell real hard. Also, Mack knows he is not an innovative coach so he has set himself up with some pretty good coordinators. So while the brain trust is trying to figure out the schemes of the next opponent, Mack is out playing the back nine and making 5 million a year. No way he walks away from that gig anytime soon, all Mack has to do is stand on the sidelines with his hands on his knees with a focused look on his face and convince everyone he knows what is going.
I don't bet, but I will bet you anything you want that Mack does not coach Texas for 10+ more years. You have obviously never met Mack. Regardless of how little credit you and everyone else here gives him, he isn't "out playing the back nine and making 5 million a year" instead of caoching. Have you ever met a successful football coach who did that?
If getting out of the hard part were what he was worried about, he could do speaking tours, serve as a consultant, run for office, or become the AD and make plenty of money.

So the "coach in waiting"(two birds in the bush) is better than the head coaching job at Tennessee(a bird in the hand)? Just saying, the head coaching job at Tennessee does not seem to be what some may of thought it was/is.
When the job is Texas, I think so. Better facilities, better recuiting base, better pay, better city to live in, richer boosters who don't have to control verything like SEC boosters, no potential recuiting violation punishments on the horizon, easier path to the BCS and NCG, wife likes the city.

Mack would have resigned he Texas had won the BCS title over Bama. He wants one more.
Now, can we please create that Texas Whorns Forum and put this and all of gdu's posts there?

I'm going to go with the under, on the theory that he gets distracted by the Dan Buckner arrest thread.

Finally something that makes sense. He is like the Troll that lives under the stairs. We don't treat him like a real troll but he is worse than all others because he never leaves. It is like he is on mission to get to 10000 posts by the end of March.
Must say he has incredible reflexes judging by his response times. Probably could be a good 3rd baseman.
