Tennessee could not hire an assistant coach? How far has their program fallen?

One of Royal's assistants (Campbell, and I can't recall his first name) wiled his career away waiting for Coach Royal to retire. When that day came, the powers-that-be passed him over, "too old."
That being said, Coach Brown looks 55 going on 75. Despite all the fun we make of him (he is, after all, fair game on this board), from all appearances he does work very hard, and very long hours. And he internalizes the pressure that comes with his job. My guess is he retires in 2 - 3 years.

I have not the foggiest idea but find it odd that Mack would sign a 6 year extension and Muschamp expect to be the coach in 2 years.
Why? The talk is that Mack will become an AD.
And maybe Mack isn't exactly sure when he will retire. Maybe it is 2 years. Maybe it is 6. But if he doesn't know, why only sign a 2 year contract?

Agreed. I think, at most, he coaches through the GG years then retires. I think he would have thought long and hard about it this year had Texas beat Alabama.

no chance Mack coaches for "10+ years before he steps down."
Muschamp is still very young. More importantly, I'm sure he has a MUCH better idea of Mack's timetable than we do and was comfortable enough with it to sign a new contract when Mack signed his.
Maybe he does leave for a lesser program, but he isn't going to have to wait 10+ years at Texas.

I love your reply, you are stating no chance Mack coaches for 10+ years as if you are a friend of the program and have some special insight into the situation which you do not. Mack has it pretty good, the best recruits want to come to UT, so unlike TCU you don't have to sell real hard. Also, Mack knows he is not an innovative coach so he has set himself up with some pretty good coordinators. So while the brain trust is trying to figure out the schemes of the next opponent, Mack is out playing the back nine and making 5 million a year. No way he walks away from that gig anytime soon, all Mack has to do is stand on the sidelines with his hands on his knees with a focused look on his face and convince everyone he knows what is going.

DC and head coach in waiting at a top 3 program.
So the "coach in waiting"(two birds in the bush) is better than the head coaching job at Tennessee(a bird in the hand)? Just saying, the head coaching job at Tennessee does not seem to be what some may of thought it was/is.
