I think they swapped one hopelessness for another, which is fine.

The problem with the NBA is that it can be hard to change course and you need to get one of the 5-10 best players in the NBA to have any hope of ultimate success.

Denver's going to have some cap space - Turiaf comes off the books, Fernandez is already headed to Spain, and its unlikely they re-sign Andre Miller (their biggest contract at 7.8).  McGee's qualifying offer puts them at 45.7 million.  Not enough to sign a big name without help, but enough to have some flexibility in terms of trades.

a big reason i love road trips is that i get to stop in small towns and hob knob with the locals.  a couple of weeks ago i stopped in marietta oklahoma to grab a subway sandwich for lunch.  the teenager in front of me in line was, well, he was special.  after seeing my cardinals tshirt, he asked if i played for the team.  when i told him i didn't, he got a really disappointed look on his face and said that he was hoping i was albert pujols.

Did you tell him you had the same number of homers as Pujols?  Maybe that would have helped.

Do you know how much it might cost the Nuggets to keep him?

This idea of keeping a lot of good players is hard to do. OKC got all their in about the same time, so they have a period of stability. Nuggets have some good players and not many bargains.

I don't see how the Nuggets aren't trapped.

Next year's cap is expected to remain the same before it starts to drop in 2013-14, so it would require 16 million to McGee to put them up against the cap.  And the market for McGee will be influenced by who's got space.  The problem for teams like Denver may not be cap space, but the paucity of game-changers this summer.  Is Eric Gordon someone to bet the farm on?  gerald Wallace?  Elton Brand? Plenty of senior citizens out there (Nash, Garnett, Allen, Hill, Duncan, etc), but after DWill Andrew Bynum may be the most enticing FA.

Lots of team have space. There's also a minimum that must be spent, which inflates salaries.

I figure that McGee draws a lot of interest, so they're close to the cap just to keep what they have. I don't see the upside for them unless they make a lopsided trade.

That's also without Miller, who plays heavy minutes for them.

I'm not that sanguine about any team's prospects other than the Thunder.

No.  So subtract 7 million.  And they still have the amnesty card to play (should they choose to), but Harrington might be the only candidate for that.

I had not seen anything about the Birdman but just googled it.  Not very informative what I found but looks like it could be serious.

Our 9-year old yellow lab has some indirect links to the Birdman.  A lady my wife worked with at the time in Boulder bought the dog as a puppy but couldn't keep him so gave him to us when he was 6 months old.  Anyway, she was dating the Birdman around that time.

the effect of the salary floor will be minimal since the cap's going to be coming down, and so many teams are over the cap anyways.  the floor is 49 million.  Not a big deal.

The windows on Jeeps suck.  This week our THIRD window got off track, so this morning I took it to the car place to have them fix it upright (it cost a lot to get it actually fixed, but at least I won't get rained on anymore).  I asked them to change the oil, too and the estimate they gave me for both was only $22.  Not bad, huh?  Then they said the wait would be over two hours, so I walked to the mall and now the total cost of the car repair is over $200.  This will teach hubby to let me handle car stuff.
