Briles said he and his football operations guys did their due diligence before adding Stonum to what is already a deep receiving corps.
"The thing about the Michigan kid," Briles said, "He's a Texas kid that went up there and graduated. It's been reported that he's had some DUI issues. That's not really the case. He was actually under age driving a car but not over the limit. It's not a DUI offense. FALSE. HE WAS OVER THE LIMIT BOTH TIMES. IN 2008, HIS BAC WAS .10 AND THE LIMIT IS .08. IN 2011 HE BLEW A .13 AND .12. AND, EVEN IF HE PLEAD DOWN TO OPERATING WHILE VISIBLY IMPAIRED, IT'S STILL A DUI OFFENSE. Then he got let go for violating his probation which was driving with an expired license. FALSE AGAIN. HE GOT 10 DAYS IN JAIL AND WAS KICKED OFF THE TEAM FOR DRIVING WITH A SUSPENDED (not expired) LICENSE AND LYING TO HIS PROBATION OFFICER ABOUT HOW HE GOT TO HIS MANDATORY PROBATION MEETING. PLUS, THE KID KNEW HIS LICENSE WAS SUSPENDED SINCE HE WOULDN'T HAVE LIED AND SAID HIS GIRLFRIEND DROVE HIM IF HE WAS UNAWARE OF THE SUSPENSION.
"But we're happy to get him. He's a one-hitter quitter. He's right there. He's a free agent. And we've got him from August to December. What he does from that time is up to him." I.E., I DON'T REALLY CARE ABOUT THIS KID EXCEPT FOR WHAT HE CAN DO FOR US THIS FALL.
Briles was asked if Stonum will be motivated by being able to make amends for his dismissal from Michigan.
"Make amends, I don't know?" Briles said. "What somebody views as wrong might not be what somebody else views as wrong. All I know is he went to college. He graduated. He has an opportunity to help Baylor football. He better relish that opportunity or it won't happen for him." OKAY. LYING ISN'T WRONG? REPEATEDLY FAILING TO MEET YOUR LEGAL OBLIGATIONS IMPOSED BY PROBATION ISN'T WRONG? FAILING TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY BY DENYING THAT YOU KNEW YOUR LICENSE WAS SUSPENDED EVEN AFTER YOU LIED TO COVER UP THE FACT THAT YOU DROVE WHILE YOUR LICENSE WAS SUSPENDED ISN'T WRONG? I REALIZE WACO IS WEIRD BUT NOT "THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS LEVEL OF WEIRDNESS"
While I don't really care if Briles wants to take a flyer on this kid and give him a third chance, his outright lying about the facts really perturbs me. I used to have some respect for the guy and what he's done but this makes me think that he's pretty much a Jackie Sherrill - Barry Switzer type win at all costs kind of guy. I really thought Baylor was better than this . . .

Um...no.
I have no doubt he would leave for TAMU, Texas or an SEC school...but anything else is now out of the question with a brand new stadium. He already turned down his alma mater Tech.

Two things:
1) I have an old friend (in terms of years of life and years as a friend) that is an old timer FW guy and TCU fan (like since the 50s), and he went to Baylor law. As such, he has always been a TCU fan but appreciates Baylor and knows people who call the shots at both schools. My friend hates Briles, and said the exact same thing about him (that is, that he is a "win at all cost," dirt bag type coach) when they first hired him. Perhaps over time that will show itself to be true in a way the world will see. The irony is those Baylor fans love him and think Patterson is a jerk (and they make fun of his weight... Weirdos).
2) What would make you think Baylor is "better than this"?

I have a relative who's a recent graduate from there. She's somewhat naive. She said that Briles has his players trained to immediately leave any parties with alcohol. I told her that's probably because they'd rather get high and go to Taco Bell.

He got his B.A. from Tech but actually played college ball for UH who he left to take the BU job

About as credible as the perpetual Patterson to KSU rumors over the last decade

Care to address Briles comments about Stonum...seems like he was not presenting an accurate picture of the kid's past.

Give Briles an offer at a Big 10, SEC, PAC 10, a Florida State and he's so gone.

Completely ignores the individual's history and motivations. Much like the Patterson to (insert big school) we heard for the last decade.
Briles has never coached outside of TX. I'd be shocked if he left.

I have a degree from Baylor and I have a lot of respect for their current president Ken Starr. I think generally that Baylor has always held itself to higher standards than say OU or A&M. Baylor and Rice were the only old SWC schools that were never on probation for NCAA football violations. I'm not saying that they never cheated (they certainly got caught multiple times in basketball), but I don't think it was as widespread as at other places. Everyone cheated back then. However, Baylor has certainly never gone and sought out thugs like the Oakland Raiders, at least until now.
The thing that really stuck in my craw about this is that it seemed like Briles just sat there and told bald-faced lies because he knew that nobody in the media was going to call him out on it. If Mack or Nick Saban or the USC coach or someone else under higher media scrutiny had done this, it would be on ESPN. With Briles, he knows that his Baylor lap dogs will just swallow everything he says and I guess he doesn't have any fear whatsoever that the administration will do anything to him because they need him to help get the stadium built. Bad publicity right now is the last thing they want.

Illinois tried offering him and didn't even get an interview. Arizona St contacted him as well after the June Jones debacle.
Wishful thinking at its finest.

Sounds like you respect Baylor because of their SWC days and recent admins. I can see respecting Ken Star and the SWC Baylor, but that doesn't mean Baylor is "better than this." Since the SWC broke up, Baylor has either been pathetic or shrouded in scandal. Bball murder, Scott Drew dirt-baggery, pathetic Ken Star "don't mess with Texas football" lawsuits, sleepy late-night Taco Bell escapades, and now Briles' recent half truths. Until RG the Turd (arguably undeservedly) took home the Heisman, this is all Baylor ever made headlines for.
I'm admittedly a Baylor-hater, but it's hard to say that this is out of line with what you can expect from the modern Baylor.

The whole moral superiority/high horse thing should've been played out when our players got busted for selling pot, and it DEFINITELY should've gone out the window once the snobbiest, most in-your-face fanbase was rooting for a program that harbored a child rapist for 15+ years
I agree. Neither side has room to throw stones and it's one reason I didn't bring up the bust except for this aside.

Stonum I can see if you have a zero tolerance policy on him. Orakpo... I am not sure I like that one at first glance. His lawyer says the stuff isn't his. Hopefully it's the truth.

Erik Fischer, who is representing Orakpo, also said nine small bottles or vials of a liquid suspected of being a steroid that police said they recovered from his client's bedroom, in a house he lives in with two others including Capi, were taken from a different room in the home and did not belong to Orakpo.
"They're not his," Fischer said. "The officer's report is incorrect. They were not taken out of his room. He categorically denies that they were his or that he uses any drugs."
In a story posted Sunday on the Denver Post website, Fischer said the drug allegations against Orakpo are "made up crap from the Fort Collins police department."
Fort Collins police searched the home of Orakpo and Capi and Paulhus' residence April 10 after obtaining warrants to search for "footwear and clothing with evidence of blood on them," according to a 90-page police report on the incident released Thursday.
Orakpo passed an NCAA drug test at the end of March, Fischer said. The NCAA has a long list of banned substances that it tests student-athletes for, including steroids and marijuana. A positive test for any results in a one-year suspension from competition.
Hopefully they did enough due diligence.
