Green Bay Packers draft profile: TCU OL Marshall Newhouse
By Scott Venci • svenci@greenbaypressgazette.com
The Green Bay Packers selected TCU offensive lineman Marshall Newhouse with the No. 169 pick in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL draft on Saturday.
Position: Offensive lineman.
School: TCU.
Height, weight: 6-foot-4, 320 pounds.
Age: 21 (Born: 9/29/1988).
Highlights: Third-team all-America by Rivals.com and an honorable mention all-America by SI.com. … first-team All-Mountain West Conference… played in the East-West Shrine Game. … ranked as the best offensive lineman in Texas by Dave Campbell's Texas Football. … Instrumental in TCU ranking in the top-10 nationally in scoring offense (38.3 points) total offense (456.7 yards) and rushing offense (239.5).
Strengths: Has sheer size and mass. Shows surprising foot quickness – tied for the best three-cone time among offensive linemen at the Combine (7.4 seconds). Can shuffle and slide. Flashes potential as a drive blocker. Three-year starter.
Weaknesses: Has a badly built, dumpy body with narrow shoulders, a fleshy midsection and stick legs. Excess weight is restricting. Plays too soft – lets defenders cross his face and does not provide enough resistance. Gets exposed in space vs. speed. Inconsistent pad level. Raw technician. Marginal flexibility to recover.
Measurables: 5.01 seconds in 40-yard dash. … 10 ¼ inch hands. … 34 inch arm length.
Noteworthy: His father, John, played football at the University of Houston and was part of three Cotton Bowl teams (1977, 1979, 1980). … His cousin, Robert Newhouse, is a former Dallas Cowboy fullback. … Another cousin, Reggie, played for the Arizona Cardinals.
Quote: "He will play both (guard and tackle). Very smart, intelligent football player. Does an excellent job of picking up pressure and twists. Very good person as well." -- James Campen, Packers offensive line coach.
NFL.com scouting report
Newhouse comes from a strong football family but does not show the kind of instincts and mental awareness than you'd expect from someone with that kind of background. As long as the defensive front plays vanilla in terms of stunts and twists, he shows no hesitations or indecision, but he can be late to react and adjust when he sees something for the first time. He shows good initial quickness and speed but struggles when he has to adjust on the move or react to counter moves. He was a quality starter at left tackle for the past three years at TCU but will probably find a better fit inside at guard at the next level.
Strengths: Marshall is tall enough with a thick build. Has a good first step and the speed to make blocks at the second level. Maintains a wide base and uses his hands to push edge rushers past the pocket. Three-year starter at TCU.
Weaknesses: Lacks the lateral agility to make blocks in space and struggles to get into position after counter moves. Does not consistently recognize stunts and blitzes and misses his blocking assignments too often. Lacks a mean streak and does not always finish blocks.
USA Today Sports Weekly scouting report
College tackle likely will move inside because of his size. Has good strength, will outwork almost everybody and can play any line spot except center.

That can be fixed easily enough. The other stuff can/may come with time.
See below.
Newhouse comes from a strong football family but does not show the kind of instincts and mental awareness that you'd expect from someone with that kind of background.
Bloodline only affects you if it is direct, as in father, grandfather etc... Not cousin twice or thrice removed. Just as his cousins fathers bloodline influenced their children.
I suppose these are all genealogy and/or geneticists providing the data to support their claims?

It only matters what the Packers thought of him to draft him. He has the opportunity now to make it work.
Good luck to Marshall!

Considering that the article doesn't specifically mention the degree of relation but the cousins all share the last name, it's safe to say they are first cousins. If that's the case, they do all share a grandfather and grandmother, which would make sense for a comparison on a genetic basis. The claim that he doesn't share the mental fortitude of the rest of his family can be explained on both genetic and development levels.
In short, you're wrong.

Shack, no one here cares about your little quips.
Please refrain from The Generally Bored humor around here. Leave it with The Frat at The Generally Bored.
Plus, everyone hates it that you snubbed me at Pappa's.
Since I am a Christian and a great human being, I will give you another chance at the next kf.c function. That's just how 2314 is.

Last I checked, cousins share a common direct ancestor ... and given that their names are all Newhouse, they all share a common male direct ancestor, like, say a grandfather ...
