How does TCU recruiting stand at this point?

Not a lot of recruiting information flowing these days and not much expected in the coming weeks. Currently in the evaluation period of recruiting until Thanksgiving when contact period resumes. Still lots of visitors to the home games and a lot of the local recruits try and catch a practice now and then, but with both high school & college in the heart of their football seasons overall very little action these days as far as announcements. So how do the Horned Frogs look so far to date for the signing class of 2008? Two outstanding line commits, one on the defense and one on the offense in Jeremy Coleman & Trevius Jones are the highlights so far. Chase “Yogi” Gallegos at quarterback and Dawaylon Cook at athlete round out the class so far. Four commits out of what is now an expected class of eighteen with four months left to recruit and limited off-campus visits allowed until late November.

Hard to predict how this class will turn out at this point but here is a position by position analysis so far.  The extra scholarship will probably go to a QB or a FB.

Quarterbacks:

Expected 1, commits 1

Yogi Gallegos (6-1/185/4.4 Irving H.S.) that appears to be very solid. Yogi unfortunately plays in a run-oriented offense and has little support from both his lineman and receivers so extremely difficult to judge him by on-field performance. He is an excellent athlete, has a very quick motion and a strong arm. Coaches love his footwork and basic instincts, but he is taking a beating at Irving so far and hopefully he arrives healthy & happy. #57 ranked player in DFW by the Dallas Morning News and Top 5 QB by the Star-Telegram.

Though Yogi appears to be the only QB to be taken in this class, coaches may shuffle positions around as they approach February and may work in one more player. A couple of players who may get consideration are:

Andy Magee 6-2/215/4.75 Palos Verde Peninsula, CA (Chadwick) Andy has played organized football only a few years and is a raw talent, but off to a blistering start. Threw fpr over 2,000 yards his first year and so far in 2007 is completing 71% of his passes and has over 1,000 yards in 3 games.

Duncan McGee 6-1/208/4.8 Austin, TX (Anderson) One service rate Duncan a Top 20 quarterback and would be highly ranked if not vertically challenged. A great athlete with all the basic tools.

Riko Smalls 6-1/190/4.4 Plano, TX (East) A tremendous athlete who could play multiple positions, a great competitor and really is developing into one of the states better QBs. Shoulder injuries held him back last season, but he has been lights-out during 7 on 7 this summer and on into PESH’s 6-0 season so far.

Press Taylor 6-2/190/4.8 Eldorado, KS Butler CC-Originally from Norman and the younger brother of Zac Taylor (Neb). Fully qualified out of HS and took a RS last season so will have 3 years to play 3.

Running backs:

Expected 2, commits 0

Primary focus has been LaMichael James (5-9/180/4.35 Texarkana, TX (Liberty-Eylau)) Tremendous speed and strength, 34″ vert,. Had a tremendous 2006 rushing: 229 att/1,587 yds/16 TDs Rec: 33/426/3 first team all-district selection, district 16-3A MVP and was a second team all-state selection and has continued his onslaught in 2007.

Next in line was Jamal Mitchell (5-10/185/4.4 Tyler, TX (Lee)) who is a very smooth runner with good instincts, but has had an injury hampered start to 2007. Jamal also a great defensive back which may his better position at the next level.

Ramonte Hampton 5-9/183/4.45 Tyler (John Tyler) Extemely quick and averaging 5 YPC in 2007. Grades may be a hindrance and has had a very up and down 2007.

Michael Connor 5-10/190/4.5 Wolfforth, TX (Frenship) Over 2,000 yards rushing, all-state 4A HM, 1st Team all-district.  Michael has carried Frenship after the injury to Seth Doege.

Jeremi (The Pounder) Mathis 6-0/200/4.7 Arlington, TX (Martin) My favorite of the bunch.  Kid lives up to his nickname and is leading 5A rusher in the DFW area.

Kortlin White 5-11/200/4.5 Rockdale, TX (explosive runner with 34 ‘ vertical)

Wide receiver:

Expected 2, commits 0

Some early disappointments at the receiver positions, including Sedrick Johnson.  However, the prospects at this position all very good and getting another big receiver appears to be the primary goal.

Corey Fuller 6-5/212/4.55 La Vernia, TX (SMU soft verbal) Will vist soon and expected to make the switch and holds a TCU offer.

Marlon Smith 6-5/205/4.7 San Antonio, TX (Wagner) Also OLB and all-district in basketball, has a TCU offer

Nathan Sowels 5-11/170/4.45 Dallas, TX (Pinkston) 400m State Champ, 14-4A ST MVP, TCU offer

Chris Mass 6-4/195/4.65 Tyler, TX (Chapel Hill) Recruited as WR/Ath

Lonzie Range 6-3/178/4.6 Carrollton, TX (Creekview) Visiting soon, torn ACL hurt his recruiting but heck of an athlete.  Visiting soon and may get an offer shortly.

Fullback

Expected 0, commits 0

Though no fullbacks are expected to sign with Kris Gardner and Chris Smith returning, coaches may give Doug Allman 5-10/210 Liberty Hill, TX a serious look.  Kid is tearing it up down in South Texas.

Tight End

Expected 1, Commits 0

The versatility of Caleb Russell 6-2/235/4.7 Midlothian, TX may get him the nod over J.D. Standley 6-3/232/4.89 Madisonville, TX, however both are solid choices.

Offensive Linemen

Expected 2, commits 1

A strong group of OL the last few years makes the recruiting this season much easier.  Trevius Jones, Tyler Lee, 6-5/300/5.21 is a great commit to start it off.  Great size & footwork, injury set him back his JR year but fully recovered, Pre-season SuperPrep, TXprep 100 Seniors to Watch, Jim Stefani’’s #13 ranked OL in Texas, Star-Telegram Texas Top 100(offers include: LSU, Nebraska, Texas Tech, OK St., Colorado, Baylor).

Of the remaining group Riley Smith or Patrick Dvoracek look to be next in line, but an overall strong group to chose from.

Patrick Dvoracek (G/T) 6-3.5/295/5.38 Mansfield, TX (Timberview) Cousin of former Sooner Dusty D.

Matthew Fitzpatrick 6-2/270 College Station, TX (Consolidated)

Hunter Hettich 6-3/272 Abilene, TX good work habits and continues to grow.

Shaquille Roberson 6-2/305/5.6 Langham Creek, TX

Riley Smith LT 6-6/280 Huntsville, TX

Isaac Watson 6-7/320/5.2 Waller, TX

Shawn Wyatt 6-4/295 Smithson valley, TX brother of TCU guard Ryan Wyatt and showing very well in camps.

Defensive Linemen

Expected 3, commits 1

An oustanding commit in Jeremy Coleman 6-3/245/4.61 33¢ vert Missouri City, TX (Marshall) leads this group. 80 tackles and 6 sacks earned him 1st team all-district. Rated as one of the top DE’’s for 2008. (offers include: Texas Tech, Mizzou, Ok St., Indiana, Baylor, Tulsa, Houston).

The JUCO, Terrance Flagg may get a lot closer look if the interio line continues to struggle.

Brian Davis DE 6-2/210 Beaumont, TX (Central) Scout Inc rated #30 DE in the country, 1st team all-district

Doran Guillory DE 6-3/265/4.75 Beaumont, TX (Kelly)

Joe Hawthorne DT 6-4/240/4.9 Arlington, TX (Martin)

Rufus Johnson DE/TE 6-6/230/4.8 Dallas, TX (Spruce) All-district TE hit the weights hard in the offseason

Ryan Pollard DT 6-3/295/5.2 Beaumont, TX (West Brook) 1st Team all-southest Texas as DT but may move to OG, brother of former Frog Robert Pollard

Marlowe Poitier DE 6-3/240/4.75 Liberty Hill, TX 2nd Team all-state 3A as JR, originally a power RB from Temecula Valley California and converted to DL at Liberty Hill, showed well at Nike Camp in FW

Chandler Spence DE 6-3/230 Arlington, TX (Lamar)

Terrance Flagg 6-2/295/4.8 Brehnham, TX (Blinn) Terrance has grown tremendously and still has great speed.  Downside is he has burned his RS year but is a monster on the field.

Linebacker

Expected 1, commits 0

A very talented group of linebackers in the mix.  Alan Dock is my personal favorite, but Burks is probably the most athletic of the bunch.

Trevor Brazil 6-0/200/4.4 Huntsville, TX 35¢ vert, all-district, 114 tkl, 4 ints

Greg Burks 6-2/200/4.5 Houston, TX (Spring Woods) tremendous athlete and can move to safety or WR, missed most of 2006 with injury but still made 2007 AP/Texas Football Super Team at LBer.

Alan Dock 6-0/210/4.5 Giddings, TX 3A Defensive Player of the Year, 2 time all-state and Maxpreps All-American HM, 167 tackles, six forced fumbles, and five sacks in 2006. Had 187 tackles as a soph.

Ryan Epperson 6-1/215/4.6 Brownsboro, TX (All-State as SO & JR)

William Henry 5-10/210/4.7 Waco, TX (La Vega) Centex Defensive POY

Dewayne Baziel 6-3/240/4.6 Cisco CC (Dec grad) Former Tech player who appears to have straightened out his situation.

Defensive Back

Expected 3, commits 0

Ben & Christian are solid athletes, but Tremain Thomas is probably the best of the bunch.

Jarrett Ben 5-10/160/4.45 Garland, TX, TCU offer

Steven Christian 6-0/175/4.5 Sacremento, CA (Kennedy) backed off early commit to Stanford, also RB, TCU offer

Mike Littleton 5-11/175/4.5 Galveston, TX (Ball) #15 in TexPreps All-Area Houston

Tramaine Thomas CB/S 6-1/175/4.5 Winnie, TX (East Chambers) Plays QB/WR/DB/PR good speed & size, #26 All-Houston area by TexPreps.

Brantwon Bowser CB 6-1/190/4.5 Phoenix, AZ (originally signed with ASU)

Ramar Watson CB 6-0/180/4.4 Chula Vista, CA Southwestern CC 39¢ vert

Khenon Hall S 5-10/185/4.45 Athens, TX Trinity Valley CC

Athlete

Expected 2, commits 1

A QB who can play a variety of positions is a TCU standard and getting DeWaylon Cook from Dallas Samuel will continue that tradition. At 6-2/180/4.6 Cook can play WR or Safety at the next level.  Offers include West Virginia and Utah, he is ranked #51 in DFW area per Dallas Morning News.

Darius Austin 5-10/170 Houston, TX (Booker T. Washington)

Jairus Kerlegan 5-11/180/4.4 Houston, TX LaMarque, TX Plays QB & S and is putting together a great season at LaMarque.

Terrence Robinson 5-9/170/4.38 Klein, TX (Oak) 35″ vert has a TCU offer.

Kicker/punter

expected 0, commits 0

Randy Bullock was the lone kicker expected to get an offer, however a coaching change may alter his decision though he seems to be high on the Aggies regardless of who the coach may be.

2007 Season: What Can Go Wrong, What Can Go Right

2007 Season: what can go wrong what can go right:

Lots of discussion about one of the most anticipated seasons for the Frogs in such a long time and thought Id share some early thoughts.

What could go wrong:

Obviously injuries. You hate to discuss potential injuries, but they are a huge part of the game but lets look at it from a depth issue rather than injury issue just to keep it light.

On the defense the depth is very good at the defensive end, linebacker and corner positions. On the interior line Fonua really helps with any lack of depth problems and Grant and Niutei are starting to show their potential to help back up Vess, Moore and Daniels (who will move inside at out as needed). So is there a weakness on the D? The depth behind Roach and Bonner may be the biggest unknown right now, especially in the passing game. Hodges, Coleman & Hunter have shown they can hit, but they need to improve their cover skills.

On the offense depth is everywhere except possibly at quarterback. As many already know the quarterback situation will be the single biggest unknown for this coming season and though all 3 returning players have skill only one has been able to show that he can do it on the playing surface at this level so far.

Turnovers may be the single biggest problem facing this team. TCU has lived off of creating turnovers and staying out of situations that could create their own turnovers. However, like injuries turnovers will happen and with inexperienced QBs you will have to expect more than the usual amount either in exchanges or in the passing game. If the OL cannot protect the young QBs and the running game gets bogged down from overloads this may turn into a long season.

What could go right:

On the defense the best thing would be more of the same. Dominating line play and linebackers flying to the ball, cornerbacks will good man skills and hard hitting safeties. This defense is on a streak right now and if they can carry the team into mid-season and give the offense time to gel this really could be a special year for the Frogs.

What would really help would be for the quarterbacks and receivers to show from the start. The defense could possibly get this team to 9+ wins with average support from the offense, but to get the top the offense needs to grow up quickly. A good showing against Baylor will really help build some confidence and possibly kick start this team for a great run. Look for the coaches to try to keep the QBs out of too many pressure situations, but they will come anyway. Baylor will bring some very good defensive lineman & linebackers to AGC stadium and you know they will be looking to stop the run and put pressure on Jackson & Dalton. How the receivers and the QBs respond may be foretelling. If a wide-out steps it up and TE Shea Reagan becomes a clutch receiver it would really help these QBs tremendously.

This is going to another fun season for TCU fans and like many I really cant wait to get it all started.

Recruiting notes:

Huge camp coming up on July 20th. Look for a great crowd from some of the top targets.

New targets added:

Marlowe Poitier (DE) 6-3/240/4.75 Liberty Hill, TX 2nd Team all-state 3A as JR, originally a power RB from Temecula Valley California and converted to DL at Liberty Hill, showed well at Nike Camp in FW

Rumors continue of possibly four silent commits.

A different look at position depth and grades: Defense & Special Teams

Lets look at the defense & special teams.

Senior laden with more than a few who will play on Sundays, this may be the best group on defense ever for the Horned Frogs.  Little more need be said about the ends Ortiz & Blake and the linebackers are as good as any in the country.  However, it doesn’t stop there as great depth on the corners and safeties positions will make this group a pleasure to watch.  Unfortunately, all things must pass as 6 of the starting 11 will be seniors this season as will TCU’s top kicker.  So how does that leave the Horned Frogs for the future and what gaps are needed to be filled?

Again the number beside the position is the collegefootballnews.com ranking and seniors are highlighted.

Left end 8.5
(93) Chase Ortiz - 6-3, 255 Sr.
(42) Matt Panfil - 6-2, 232 Jr.
(98) Jerry Hughes - 6-2, 248 So.
Kris Gardner 6-1, 220 Fr.
Braylon Broughton 6-6, 225 Fr.

Ortiz was a linebacker out of highschool, Panfil a quarterback/safety, Hughes a running back and Gardner a TE.  Do you think the coaches know how to find talent?  Great experience, depth, youth and quality but possibly a huge question so coaches will go after one here and that one may not play DE currently.

Defensive tackle 8.5
(55) James Vess - 6-3, 282 Jr.
(96) Wayne Daniels - 6-2, 240 So.
Kelly Griffin 6-1, 280 Fr.

Griffin really adds depth to this position, Vess has just continued to improve and impress and Daniels is solid.  This position has turned around significantly the last two years but one more recruit will be needed for depth.  Coaches hoping Adren Dorsey makes the call and others close to the top of the list include Hector Negrete and Ryan Pollard (brother of frog great Robert Pollard).

Nose tackle 8.5
(56) Cody Moore - 6-1, 292 Jr.
(57) Cory Grant - 6-2, 303, RFR
(94) Henry Niutei - 6-4, 292 RFR
John Fonua 5-11, 280 Jr.

Another position that suddenly is looking good.  Expect to see a lot of all these players in the rotation and with this talent, depth, youth and quality the coaches will pass on this position this year.

Right end 8.5
(97) Tommy Blake - 6-3, 252 Sr.
(91) Allen Christopher - 6-4, 236 So.
(90) Clarence Leatch - 6-4, 238 RFR
Jason Fitch 6-4, 230 Fr.

Not much needs to be said about the experience and quality at the top.  The problem with having the former RB Tommy Blake here is that you have a hard time getting him off the field and letting the others develop.  Christopher & Leatch have held their own and the Jeremy Coleman commit will provide for the future.

Sam linebacker 8.5
(46) David Hawthorne - 6-0, 225 Sr.

(51) Robert Henson - 6-1, 228 Jr.
Ricky “Tank” Carder 6-2, 205 Fr.
Luke Shivers 6-2, 215 Fr.

Henson & Hawthorne are simply a pleasure to watch and look for each to have a shot at the next level.  Huge unknowns beyond those two and don’t expect to see either freshman on the field this season.  Coaches are pursuing at least one high quality linebacker for the future and here’s hoping Jon Majors is that one, but Mark Hunter, Alan Dock and Brandon Wiliams are a few others out there who would fit in nicely.

Mike linebacker 8.5
(39) Jason Phillips - 6-1, 234 Jr.
(41) Daryl Washington - 6-3, 228 So.
(37) Darius Ingram - 6-2, 235 Sr.

Is TCU the next linebacker U?  Phillips, Washington and Ingram are a tough to beat.  If possible the coaches will try to get a second linebacker to add depth here, but not a priority with this small class expected for 2008.

Strong safety 8
(6) Brian Bonner - 5-11, 199 Sr.
(29) Stephen Hodge - 6-0, 212 Jr.
(28) Colin Jones - 6-0, 205 RFR.
Andy Burrell 6-2, 200 Jr.
Chris Goodson 6-1, 210 Jr.

Bonner & Hodge will get most of the playing time and Jones provides depth.  One more safety needed here and the offer has been made to Derrick Grant however Tramaine Thomas may get a call.

Free safety 8
(4) Steven Coleman - 6-3, 204 Jr.
Tekerrian Cuba 6-3, 197 Fr.
Tejay Johnson 6-0, 195 Fr.

Coleman came on strong last year and really solidified FS.  Cuba & Johnson are expected to compete for PT in September so no offers here unless something falls through.

Weak safety 8
(27) David Roach - 6-2, 215 Sr.
(19) Corderra Hunter - 6-2, 202 So..
Chez Thomas 5-11, 180 Fr.
Johnny Fobbs 6-1, 190 Fr.

David Roach may never come off the field as he will also provide depth at free safety.  Hunter has speed and size and the youngsters are highly regarded.  Only one safety taken this year and probably not here.

Left cornerback 8
(20) Nick Sanders- 5-10, 174 So.
(43) Alex Ibiloye - 6-0, 170 RFR
Jercell Fort 5-11,175 Fr.

Three young playmakers with speed provide quality, depth, youth & experience.  No offers needed here.

Right cornerback 8
(15) Torrey Stewart - 5-11, 175 Sr
.
(10) Rafael Priest - 5-10, 163 So.
Chris Clarke 5-9 180 Sr.
Greg McCoy 5-10, 172 Fr.

McCoy may get PT this year, but Stewart & Priest are rock solid.  Depth is need so the coaches have offered Jarrett Ben from Garland.

Special Teams

PK 8
(44) Chris Manfredini - 5-9, 165 Sr.
Ryan Casano 5-10, 200 Fr.
P 8
(11) Derek Wash - 6-4, 177 Sr.
(7) David Porter - 5-11, 170 RFR.
Anson Kelton 6-4/250 Fr
SN 8
(90) Clint Grisham - 6-4, 215 RSo.

Anson Kelton may take hold of the punter position in September and Casano may handle KO and long field goal duties behind the extremely consistent Manfredini.  The offer to kicker Randy Bullock seems confusing but he is one who may be hard to pass up on.   Terrence Robinson is a speedster that has been offered and may take over the return duties as well as help out in the slot.

Experienced, fast and talented sums up this defense.   Though 6 starting seniors leaving after this season (Ortiz, Blake, Hawthorne, Stewart, Bonner & Roach)  the depth on the defense may allow the transition to 2008 go with little or no drop-off.  A lot depends upon the defensive ends getting experience and adding a little more bulk.  May never be able to replace a combo such as Blake & Ortiz, but just getting close should be enough.  The depth at cornerback and safety positions is better than ever at TCU and the talent only looks to be continually improving.

A different look at position depth and grades: Offense

Posted on June 23, 2007

One of my weaknesses is I like to look at the roster from various perspectives to determine the quality at the position, the maturity or youth there and where the weaknesses are that should be addressed in the coming recruiting classes.   This is similar to the prior two posts but more in-depth and would appreciate your comments.  I will start with the offense first and then look at the defense another day.

Overall the youth on the offense is evident and the depth on the offensive line and running backs is tremendous.  Questions at the quarterback and wide receiver positions need to be resolved, but both positions have talented players.

The number to the right of the position is the grade per CollegeFootballNews.com and the highlighted players are the Seniors.

OFFENSE

Left tackle 8
(70) Marshall Newhouse - 6-3, 317 So.
(79) Nic Richmond - 6-8, 298 So.
(50) Tyler Marrou - 6-5, 268, So.
Robert Clark 6-6, 265 Jr.

very young at LT but extremely talented. The Newhouse, Richmond and Marrou rotation will probably be the strongest of the OL positions.  Great depth, quality and youth and no immediate recruiting needs.

Left guard 8
(64) Matty Lindner - 6-4, 298, Sr.

(60) Preston Phillips - 6-6, 293 Jr.
Josh Vernon 6-2, 295 Rfr.
Adam Lowery 6-2, 270 Sr.

Probably have a few heads shaking on what Vernon is doing here.  Phiilips and Lindner comprise a very good and experienced rotation but the overall depth is lacking.  Josh or another OL will need to be moved to provide depth and future quality.  At least one recruit is needed here and hopefully 6-4/349 Devric Gallington or another big guard such as Jimmy Miller, Kestin Blevins or Trevius Jones comes trough .

Center 8
(75) Blake Schluetter - 6-3, 272, Jr.
(74) Tony Savino - 6-2, 277 Sr.
(76) Jake Kirkpatrick - 6-5, 268 RFR
(77) Spencer Thompson - 6-4, 270 Fr.

The depth & youth at center I think will allow the coaches to move Josh Vernon.  A very athletic group and the future looks good with Spencer Thompson and Kirkpatrick running the OL.

Right guard 8
(63) Heath Raetz, 6-5, 297 Jr.
(65) Giles Montgomery - 6-5, 288 Jr.
Josh Karlin 6-4, 266 Jr.

Another good rotation at the top but health has been an issue.  Lots of experience and no youth so the recruiting of guards soon is a must.

Right tackle 8
(71) Wade Sisk - 6-7, 271, Jr.
(61) Marcus Cannon - 6-5, 319 RFR
Jeff Olson 6-5, 285 Fr.

At first glance this looks to be a suspect area, but Cannon will be another good one for TCU and Olson keeps getting bigger and stronger daily.  The needs for 2 OG is much more than the needs at the tackles.

Tight End 6
(86) Shae Reagan - 6-4, 261 Jr.
(89) Quinton Cunnigan - 6-3, 237 Sr.
(84) Evan Frosch - 6-4, 235 RFR
Logan Brock 6-4, 230 Fr.
Tom Stevens 6-6, 235 Sr.

What a great group of talented receivers. Both experience and youth here, but possibly some need for a blocking TE, possibly Justin Horton or J.D. Standley.

Fullback 7.5
(47) William Jackson - 6-0, 235 Sr.
(36) Chris Smith - 5-11, 231 So.
Cameron Cash 5-10, 205 So.

Chris Smith may rewrite how TCU handles the FB position in the future.  Depth is good and quality is more than what is needed at this position.

Tailback 7.5
(23) Aaron Brown - 6-1, 196 Jr.
(24) Joseph Turner - 6-1, 226 So.
Jai Caveness 5-9, 175 Fr.
Justin Watts 5-10, 198 Jr..
Joseph Banyard 5-10, 195 Fr.

Makes you wonder as you look at this list why we are offering any RBs, but there may be some shifting here and because of the high risk position look for at least 1 in this next class.  Romonte’ Hampton and LaMichael James are on top of the coaches lists.  Brown and Turner will be a highly effective tandum along with Chris Smith and Watts will fill in when needed to allow the freshment to redshirt.

Quarterback 6.5
(11) Marcus Jackson6-1, 216 So.
(14) Andy Dalton - 6-3, 185 RFR
(12) Zach Eskridge - 6-3, 195 RFR

Here is the huge question mark for TCU.  Jackson has more experience and is a little stronger while Dalton may be the more accurate passer, however there isn’t enough seperation between them.  Little experience, lots of youth and unknown quality.  TCU will need two QBs to provide depth and future security and have one commit from Yogi Gallegos.

Wide receiver (H) 6
(2) Donald Massey- 5-11, 172 Jr.
(3) Marcus Brock - 6-0, 182 Sr.
(22) Ryan Christian - 5-11, 188 So.
Jeremy Kerley 5-10, 185 Fr.
Kagen Elenberg 6-0, 165 Jr.

Massey can burn anyone and will probably lead the team in receptions but is inconsistent and Brock has had more than his share of injuries.  This position may be great or may be one of the more frustrating for the coaches.  Little experience after Massey and you may see a true freshman step it up before too long here.  Questionable quality and depth, but huge potential.  Look for at least one recruit here, preferrably Joe Adams or Isiah Sweeney.

Wide receiver (X) 6
(21) Ervin Dickerson - 6-1, 200 Sr.
(82) Clint Renfro - 6-0, 160 RFR
(20) Bart Johnson - 6-1, 190, RFR
Sir Demarco Bledsoe 6-3, 175 Fr.
Prince Bynum 6-3, 185 Jr.

Someone will need to step it up from this group.  Will Renfro turn into the quality receiver we have been waiting anxiously to see?  Johnson is solid and the freshmen have huge potential.    Experince at the top and then a huge gap of unknowns so look for another WR recruit here with Lester Ward being the top target.

Wide receiver (Z) 6
(85) Walter Bryant - 6-4, 206 Jr.
(13) Derek Moore - 6-3, 177 Sr.
(88) Jimmy Young - 6-1, 200 RFR
Jonathan Jones 6-3, 197 Fr.
William Cage 6-4, 207 Jr.

Derek Moore has shown he can make the big catches when needed, but he & Bryant have been up and down.  Jimmy Young may be the future star but needs a lot of work.  Questionable depth and quality and another gap in experience.  Another WR recruit will be needed and coaches hoping Marlon Smith fills this need.

Not a lot of needs on the offense with WR dominating the recruiting process so far.  Steven Osborne from South Garland and Chris Roddy form Hobbs’ high school may be future targets depending upon what is heard from on the current offers.  Still need two big offensive guards and another quarterback, but the Gallegos commit has to bring some relief to the coaches.

An early look at the depth chart.  Expect a lot of movement as players such as Ibiloye, Hodges and Young will push for PT.

OFFENSE

Left tackle
(70) Marshall Newhouse - 6-3, 317 So
(79) Nic Richmond - 6-8, 298 So.

Another walk-on quarterback

Cole Frederick 6-1/200/4.65 Houston Christian High School:

Cole transferred to Houston Christian right as two a days started in August of his senior year and split time with the returning starter before finally winning taking over the position midway through the season.  He finished the year throwing for 1,414 yards and 14 TDs completing 71 of 140 pass attempts.  He also ran for 2 more TDs as a QB and returned an interception for a touchdown while playing linebacker.  “Our team made it to the 2nd round of the playoffs before losing to Northland Christian” he stated in an email.

After the season he had some recruiters talk to him “but coming from a small school and playing there for only a year while receiving little publicity I only had offers from small schools out of state and division 3 schools in Texas”.  His head coach at Houston Christian, Mike Johnston was a former coach at Katy High School and won 3 state championships as the Tiger’s head coach.  Coach Johnson is very familiar with the TCU coaches and contacted Eddie Williamson about Cole.  He said Coach Johnson took him up to TCU to talk to the staff about their quarterback situation and walking on at the school .  Cole finished up saying ”the coaches showed us around and were very nice.  Coach Schultz told me that it was a great time to walk on as a QB, considering that one was not signed in the 2007 class.  After seeing the campus, the facilities, and the rest of Fort Worth, I decided that it was the place for me.”  He will attend summer school and work out with the other freshmen recruits.  “I am looking forward to it to say the least.”

Welcome aboard Cole Frederick

Walking-on for 2007

Even though the Horned Frogs have had some recent success with walk-on players and not just in the traditional areas of kickers and punters, the TCU coaches have never emphasized walk-ons in the past.  However this year appears to signify an big change in approach for the program in regards to those potential players.  The change may be due to the fact that walk-on players such as Ryan Christian, Tyler Luttrell, Derek Moore, Tony Savino, William Cage, and Prince Bynum are competing for playing time on the field for the Frogs and the expected incoming group of walk-ons may have an even more impact.

Many Frog fans have already heard of the potential arrivals of quarterback Erick Herbel from McKinney North and Kyle Dooley from Papillion, Nebraska, but several other high quality walk-ons are expected to arrive over the summer.  Some of these players have been over-looked for a particular reason and others leave you shaking your head how they slipped through without an offer for a full scholarship, but either way the TCU football program will see a huge benefit from them in the fall.

One last comment before discussing the players:  The walk-on candidates are not bound by any letter-of-intent and can elect to enroll at or transfer to another school without notice or penalty, thus any of the expected walk-ons may choose another opportunity if it arises.

The two we have heard much about:

Eric Herbel is a kid that I have liked for a long time and is one of those head shakers.  A completion percentage of 69.9% with over 2,500 yards, 31 touchdowns and only 6 interception in 246 attempts has to boggle the mind on how he ended up as a walk-on, but thankfully he has chosen TCU.  A teammate of TCU recruit Jeff Olson at North, the two will room together and expect him to provide stiff competion for playing time soon after his arrival at TCU.  Eric chose TCU as a preferred walk-on over similar offer from Oklahoma State.

Kyle Dooley is a 6-3, 285 pound offensive lineman from the heart of lineman territory, Pappilion, Nebraska.  A high ankle sprain which has hobbled the young man for quite some time is the reason why the offers never came despite heavy early recruitment.  Coming to TCU Dooley needs to do little except prove he has recovered from the injury before getting a full ride in the future.  Kyle chose TCU over Nebraska.

The ones you may not have heard about:

Cole Knuth was offered opportunities at Oklahoma State, Colorado, Illinois and other schools but has elected to attend TCU.  Cole was a former tight end rated as high as number 16 in the state at that position, but with a change in offense came a position change his senior season at Prosper.  Being originally recruited as a 6-4, 280 pound tight end with 5.0 speed in the forty after his junior year, he was overlooked by many programs though he seemed to be a perfect fit on the offensive line.  His father, Ken said TCU seems to be the perfect fit for him and with his agility (30″ vertical) Coach Williamson has him slotted as a potential center for TCU.

Geron Flowers is a speedster out of noted Tyler John Tyler who played out of position according to the coaches at TCU.  His speed and agility makes him a perfect fit for the defensive backfield despite spending most of his time in high school as a wide receiver.

Rufus Hardy is a kid that had all kinds of potential as a running back, safety and linebacker at Flower Mound High School until a severe knee injury ended his senior season almost as soon as it started.  Now, more than a year later and hard work at recovering Rufus is in school and working hard to make the 105 man roster.

The expected walk-ons:

Kyle Dooley OL 6-3/285/5.2 Papillion, NE

Geron Flowers DB 5-10/170/ 4.4 Tyler, TX (John Tyler)

Rufus Hardy DB 5-11/190/4.5 Flower Mound, TX

Eric Herbel QB 6-3/195/4.9 MCKinney, TX (North)

Cole Knuth OC 6-4/280/5.0 Prosper, TX

Many more player will attempt to walk-on at TCU including another highly regarded quarterback and I will try to bring any information to light as soon as available on those players.  I personally admire these kids tremendously and wish each and every one of them the best of luck.
