Quarterbacks:

Current roster:

Andy Dalton (SR) will need to be replaced and Casey Pachall (RSFR) is expected to take his spot.  Yogi Gallegos (SO) and Matt Brown (FR) are also in the mix.  Brown was highly recruited out of Allen, TX and can run & throw well but needs to develop strength and technique .  Sam Carter (FR) will also get a shot at QB though is expected to move to WR or Safety.  Expect the staff to sign 2 QB prospects.

Commit:

Dominic Merka 6-4/215/4.6 Crosby,TX  Dual-threat QB that is expected to get looks as a QB but probably moves to fill the pass-catching TE spot described below.

Others:

Doug Gentry 6-0/195/4.5 Mexia, TX Had over 1,800 yards during his sopohmore & junior season, 2nd team All-State.

Tight End

Current

Evan Frosch (SR) is the current starter followed by Logan Brock (JR) and Corey Fuller (SO).  All three are primarily blocking ends but have decent speed and hands.  Walker Dille (SO) was hoped to be the pass catching threat but so far has struggled and uncertain what the future holds for him.  Stephen Bryant (FR)  will initially be given a shot at tight end but his athleticism may be needed elsewhere.  Look for the coaches to try and sign a pass-catching tight end to provide more options in the middle of the field and shorter yardage downs.

Offers:

Chris Barnett 6-6/245/4.5 Dallas, TX (A. Maceo Smith) Currently committed to Oklahoma but coaches there seemed to accept the fact that he isn’t solid to them by there chasing Max Stephenson and getting a commit from him.  TCU probably down his list right now but he has changed programs twice at the start of 2010 and while back with his dad at A Maceo Smith some schools may back off from him as a result of his moves.  Has good grades and coaches still big on him.

Carlos Carvajal 6-2/220/4.65 Hialeah, FL Transfer from American after junior year has offers from Purdue, Louisville, Tennessee and others.  Plays TE & DE but has tremendous hands and great strength for his size.  Not afraid to mix it up and has good technique on his blocks.

Offensive tackle

Current roster:

Senior Marcus Cannon slips over from right tackle to replace NFLer Marshall Newhouse at left tackle and junior Jeff Olson takes the spot vacated by Cannon.  Behind them are senior Zach Roth, junior Spencer Thompson, sophmore Trevius Jones, rs freshmen James Dunbar,  John Woolridge, Matt Johnston and true freshman Nykiren Wellington.  The move by Olson to the starting slot surprised many but is a very welcomed surprise as it should add stability for another season.  Lots of youth on the depth chart and no immediate impact players are needed.  However with Cannon & Roth are gone after the next season their spots need to be filled and the commit by Shayvion Hatten is a huge start.

Commit (2):

Shayvion Hatten 6-5/265/5.0 Daingerfield, TX 1st Team 2A All-State, 2nd team All-Smoaky.com (All East Texas) recorded 32 Pancake Blocks, 18 Knockdown Blocks, and Graded 90% on the two-time defending state champion Tigers.  Has long arms and very good strength & quickness.

Bobby Thompson  6-7/285/5.1 Midland, TX (Christian) 1st Team All-State OL, 1st team All-District OL & DL Offered by TAMU, TTech, and others.

Offers:

Le’Raven Clark 6-6/250/4.9 Rockdale, TX 1st Team All District as both OL & DL, HM All-State OL.  Former tight end and has the long arms and great footwork needed at the tackle spot.  Needs to add strength but is a very promising athlete.

Bobby Hart 6-4/283/5.0 Ft Lauderdale, FL (St Thomas Aquinas) Plenty of offers and TCU probably not high on his list.

LaQuan McGowan 6-6/330/5.2 Amarillo, TX (Boys Ranch)

Defensive tackle

Current roster:

Seniors Cory Grant & Kelly Griffin anchor the defensive tackle spots and are backed up by Jeremy Coleman (SO), D.J. Yendrey (SO), David Johnson (FR), Bryant House (RSFR) & Ray Burns (RSFR).  Grant & Griffiin are as solid as they come and Johnson has shown a lot of promise but the coaches will obviously need at least 2 tackles in this class and have a shot at a good one in Chuck Hunter.   Hunter looks to be a TCU lock unless LSU steps in though they appear to be full at that spot for now.  Tyler Porter may be the best option behind those two and coaches may decide that taking 3 is not a bad option if he decides on TCU.

Offers

DeMarcus Hodge 6-1/300/5.1 Monroe, LA (Neville) Was dominating presence in the middle and helped lead Neville to the state championship in 2009.  Offers include Arkie, Tenn, MissSt along with TCU.

Chuck Hunter 6-1/295 West Monroe, LA - Key member of 5A state championship team. Able to work through double teams and still get the sack. Quick first-step and burst at the snap enables him to make many plays in the backfield. Attended Mississippi State’s Junior Day recently. Ole Miss has offered. Hunter is an underrated prospect in terms of offers, but he is one of only a handful of current three-stars in Louisiana.
