The wide receivers

Posted on May 25, 2008

There is probably not a position with so much potential and so many question marks on any team as is the wide receivers for the Horned Frogs.  Jimmy Young, Jeremy Kerley and Bart Johnson have shown flashes of brilliance and nothing but question marks surround players such at Clint Renfro, Donald Massey and Walter Bryant.  Because of the uncertainties that exist more than a few walk-ons or former walk-ons have made the depth chart, including William Cage, Curtis Clay, Ryan Christian, Bart Johnson and Tyler Luttrell.  Also, all three first year players: Sam Shutt, Justin Moreaux and former JUCO all-american Marques Parker will be expected to have an immediate impact.

Depth Chart:

WR (Z)

Walter Bryant-injuries and other issues have hampered his development.  The senior has come up big in tight situations and hopefully will be a solid go to guy in 2008.

Marques Parker-JUCO all-american, great athlete and intelligent player.

Curtis Clay-walk-on from Lockhart and had one catch in 2007, but is expected to see more PT in 2008.  Had a very good spring.

WR (X)

Jimmy Young-Had 23 catches in 2007 and the longest play of the year for the frogs in his 70 TD reception against Stanford.  Great hands and has shown the ability to make big plays and demonstrated by a brilliant catch in the Houston Bowl.

Jonathan Jones-RSFr had a very good spring and uses his 6-4 frame very well.  Has great hands and good speed to go with his size and has many frogs fans excited about seeing him on the field in 2008.

Justin Moreaux-True incoming freshman was leading high school receiver in Louisiana in 2007.  Has only played football a few seasons and may need time to develop further.

WR (H)

Bart Johnson-Originally a walk-on but his clutch receptions and highlight catches earned him a scholarship.

William Cage-Senior walk-on has been a consistent performer for the frogs.

Ryan Christian-Played at tailback in 2007 but has potential to become a true playmaker in 2008.

WR (Y)

Jeremy Kerley-Contributed as a true freshman in 2007 and is expected to play a huge role in the offense for 2008.

Tyler Luttrell-walk-on and son of former frog Mike Luttrell.  Switched to WR after helping with the depth at QB.

Sam Shutt-incoming freshman with tremendous speed and athleticism.

Others

Clint Renfro-Sophomre with huge potential but has been extremely limited due to injuries.

Donald Massey-Senior with great speed but grade issues have him as a big question mark.

Emmanuel Asalou-sophomore walk-on from FW Dunbar with very good speed.

John Brown-walk-on from Overland Park, KS

Kagen Elenburg-JR walk-on from Jacksboro.

Austin Galifaro-JR walk-on from San Antonio

Davis Hinton-6-3/220 freshman from Midland.

Willie Leiss-FR walk-on from Hurst.

Billy Pizor-SO walk-on from Katy.

Garret Winsett-RSFR walk-on from Round Rock.

Needs in the class of 2009:

Only one senior scholarship player on the depth chart in 2008 and lots of youth on the team, but definitely some holes to fill.  Expect at least two incoming freshman and coaches had a great start at filling those spots when A.J. Dugat announced his commit.   His situation appears shaky at best so coaches will try to hold on to him while continuing to bring in two more for the position.

Commits:

  • WR A. J. Dugat 6-1/205/4.5 Dayton, TX Potential WR, CB, TB or Safety.  Had 391 yards on 39 carries and 8 TDs rushing along with 67 catches for 957 yards and 14 TDs receiving.  Played full-time on the corner for the D, took over at QB when Cody Green was hurt and returned punts as well. District MVP, Scout #74 recruit in the country and State Top 50 recruit.  Texas Football analysis on Dugat after committing to the Frogs:TCU has been really active recently, and it just paid off in a big-time way — a big time offensive threat at wide receiver. The Horned Frogs landed Dayton WR A.J. Dugat, a wide receiver who is ranked in the state’s top 100 by most recruiting outlets and who blew up in 2007 on the outside after moving over from running back earlier in his career. He was a big reason Dayton went all the way to the state semifinals last season, as the speedy Dugat finished with eight rushing touchdowns (on only 39 carries!) and almost 1,000 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. He was almost as good in 2006, too (706, 9 TDs).Dugat is a classic big play threat — he has breakaway speed, is difficult to tackle and reads his blockers well on those little slip screens people love to run these days. Perhaps his greatest asset is his ability to hit the hole in a defense (a skill that probably stems from his days as a RB), because when he finds the seam, he blows through it quick as a blink. He is a very talented young man, and if the Frogs can hold him, he could press for playing time very early.http://feedroom.gamedaytv.com/prepticket/?sid=100254&cid=10009&p=cowboys1&sessionIDPassed=z32g01q14xh2fj55qvtyfs45&bhcp=1&itemid=1001213303&catid=5750 http://s144.photobucket.com/albums/r180/mabethea/Video/?action=view&current=6aa09314.flv
  • Offers:

  • WR Rueben Randle 6-4/200 Bastrop, LA #8 rated recruit in the nation
  • WR Skyler Scott 6-1/185/4.5 Laredo, TX (United) Played at West Mesquite in 2007
  • WR Uzoma Nwachukwu 6-1/180/4.42 Allen, TX One of the best in the area, Texas Top 50, 41″ vert.
  • Others

    JUCO

WR Travis Cobb 6-0/180/4.4 Brenham, TX (Blinn) 39″ vert

WR Justin Jordan 5-11/190/4.41 Brenham, TX (Blinn)

As many questions as there are in TCU’s current roster, there is almost as many in the recruiting class of 2009.  Is Dugat coming?  Any chance at the kids offered?  Who is next in line?  We shall see with Dugat, but coaches seem to go through this every season and somehow hold on to the players.  The new offense should attract more athletes at the receiver positions, but few have seen it in action.  Of the offers, Randle, Scott and Nwachukwu, the Horned Frogs look to be long shots.  Kenric McNeal is highly recruited and coming to visit, but he appears to be headed to TAMU.  Coaches only need 2 but this may be the toughest 2 they go after this year.

So Austin Adams is committed, a JUCO, for ‘08… a nice addition to a young corps.

Alonzo Adams has actually signed and enrolled at TCU. He will be on the ‘08 roster and is a great addition especially this late.
