Final week for class of 2008
Posted on January 28, 2008
What a difference a week makes. Lots of changes in the recruiting of the class of 2008 for TCU recently, including committments. TCU gets James Fry, a hard working center out of the football factory of Smithson Valley (Probably not a better place to send your kid to high school in the state). We do lose out on Devin Thomas who picks Miss and big Tony Gillespie who looked like a TCU lock just last week but went to KanSt.
Other recruiting news heading into the final week:
Coaches hitting hard on LaMichael James still and despite his Ore commit he appears to be open to visits and discussion. Here is hoping they get him to see the light this week.
Staff has been all over Louisiana last few weeks and will get visits from Damaris Johnson and Alonzo Landry this week. Johnson visited Memphis last week and said it was okay, so TCU probably moves up the list on him. Landry is a stud but really has to push to get qualified.
Lubbock Estacado playmaker Jeremy Watson will visit the final weekend, but coaches will have a tough sell on him.
It appears coaches plan on over-signing in this class by taking a few kids who may not qualify.
Good luck to the staff this final week and looking forward to seeing how this year’s group will finally shake out!

Also visiting is Blaiz Foltz.
Is Nelson still an option?
Coaches tried to get Nelson to come to FW and apparently he decided to firm up his commit to Purdue. They are still working on him but doesn’t look good right now.
Saw video on PM of Foltz playing DLine, any chance he could be a DT for us… Looked like a monster in the clip.
Feisty, do the coaches have some good ties to La? I see we are recruiting a good number from there. Also it looks like we have 13 commits now. After transfers out grades etc how many ships do we have to bring players in? Do you think there will be any surprises out of the blue at the end like we have had some years? As always thanks for all your efforts and the good info. Rick Hosea
Thanks Feisty.
One more question. Did things fall through with McVaney? I thought he’d be similar to Reagan, where he could find another position if QB didn’t work out. Or was he more marketing hype than anything?
Hey Rick:
Coaches have recruited LA in the past (Jimmy Young, the Evangel kids, Guillory & Jones, etc) but they probably haven’t hit it as hard as they have this year. Tademy has lots of LA connections and the CB coach Jennings probably assisted on Scott, but overall the staff just sees some opportunities there.
LSU gets its pick of who they want out of LA and the other SEC schools hit some of the top targets, but a lot of really good kids fall to schools such as La Tech because of lack of recruiting efforts in the state by larger programs.
TCU has enough presence in the state that kids are hearing about the school and look for them to step it up in the future.
I am not sure how many the coaches will sign this year, but may take more than we have room and if they qualify as them to gray shirt. 18 looks solid and that is leaving 1 opening for a potentially huge transfer this summer(you didn’t hear that from me….). They have held off on the Dooley scholarship so far which is creating the extra slot. Kid deserves the ’ship though and we need OL.
hrndfrg:
Coaches have decided to pass on McVaney. We shall see how that turns out, but kid does look like a very good athlete and was all-district on offense & defense in a solid district so doesn’t look like just hype.
They may re-visit him as things get closer to signing day, but I think it is highly doubtfull he gets an offer.
Thanks again! This recruiting season has not been for the faint of heart.
