Class of 2008 needs and concerns
Posted on February 28, 2007
The biggest concern to many TCU fans is that in no way will it be ranked higher than #80 in Rivals or Scout team rankings, but that just means lots of talk on KFc and little more. The primary reason for the poor ranking (other than a totally screwed up method of ranking teams in the first place) will be the small size of the class for 2008, around 17 signees. This could change depending upon transfers (in or out) and possible grade losses, but 16 is the number to start with right now.
No position will take a huge hit in numbers after the 2007 season, but losses of defensive ends Chase Ortiz and Tommy Blake as well as linebacker David Hawthorne and safeties Brian Bonner and David Roach will definitely put a dent on the defense. On the offense TCU’s biggest losses will be receivers Marcus Brock, Ervin Dickerson and Derek Moore. These areas will consume up to 8 of the 16 available openings leaving very little wiggle room for the remainder of the class.
The remaining 8:
Quarterback (2) - backup depth and developing players for the future will make it necessary that this class has at least 2 QBs. Whether one is a JUCO will depend upon the how well the current group performs in 2007.
Conerback (2)- Gone will be Torrey Stewart and with the remaining group that includes JUCO transfer Chris Goodson it will put the staff in a bind in the future if they sign fewer than 2 CBs. The offset is that the players on hand are extremely talented which may open up a slot to be used elsewhere.
Wow, that leaves 4 slots!
The last four will include a couple of big guys on the OL & DL, and a RB.
QB (2)
RB (2)
WR (3)
TE (1)
OL (2)
DE (2)
DT (1)
LB (1)
CB (2)
S (1)
The list and numbers have been altered as new information, including the loss of Detric James and Ryan Sefton from the team, has emerged.

We will need to recruit a fullback next year, or a linebacker allowing Shivers or Carden to move to offense and backup Chris Smith. We should try to get a tailback with some size to complement the scatbacks we have signed recently. And, having signed only two OL this year (one of whom has to grow a lot) we must add three next year, or we will be very inexperienced in 2010 and 2011.
What should we give up to add these? If we get one good quarterback to add to what we have, I see no need for another. And if Braughton gets in school (and can stay), we don’t need a DT.
We’re going to need a placekicker, too.
Burner, can’t argue too much except this will be such a tight class that I don’t see there will be anyway they sign a kicker. Possibly offer a greyshirt opportunity and overall they may expand the class that way to cover some more areas, especially the OL.
This coming year will be frustrating as far as recruiting goes.

hey Gunner, funny how they can never seem to get ahead on the safeties. possibly cut the number depending upon Hunter & Burrell.
The do need to replace the WRs though or else will be in a big hurt in 2 years.
Surprised you left off ol’ Taylor Thompson on the TE section. 6′6 235 and came to our junior day.
Gunner, thanks and he should be there. Will add and could have sworn he was already there.
Did you check out the benavides kid (OL from Los Fresnos)?
Kapron Lewis-Moore is 6′5 and mobile, 225 or so. He is good, right. I’d like to add another 6′5 type to Broughton, Russell, Leatch, and Christopher.
Caleb, the TE from Manfield, has the size, strength, and speed to get it done. I like him.

I have never seen so many short QB’s on a list in my life. If that is what we are choosing from this year, it could be another disaster.
At least there are a couple who fit normal qualifications. I’d love to get one of those 6′5 guys that could run a little.
There were 7 QB’s on your list that were 6′1 or shorter, even. Good grief!
Benivedes is a bad boy!
I think there should never be a year when you don’t take at least 2 corners, 2 DT’s, 2 DE’s, and 3 OL’s. That is an absolute must. Those are the critical positions in football.
QB’s, you should take at least 2 every other year.
There is always the great wide out and a great super RB. But there are always plentiful wide outs and running backs. So, we should never be short at those positions. And if you think about it, every kid wants to play QB, so how we got into our mess there, is hard to understand.
Hey Feisty, I am on your 2009 recruiting list but my name is misspelled. I don’t know how I am up there but I appreciate it. I would just like my name spelled correctly.
Thanks,
Reid McCann
Hey Reid:
Sorry for the misspelling and have made the correction. You were on the list because you are at a school TCU recruits well and have been mentioned by either the coaches or in the paper. Obviously TCU cannot make any recruiting contact with you until your JR year starts so the 2009 list is just names to be aware of right now.
Hope you have an interest in TCU.
I am under the impression that TCU will take 3 OL for 08.
Plan to visit TCU soon and attend camp.
Have gotten communication from coaches and this university is my first choice and would love to attend in the fall of 2008. Notice 4 names of kickers/punters on your list, including mine. Would appreciate any info/help in my quest to attend/play ball at TCU. Had a good season in 2006 and plan another in 2007. Stats for 2006 are:
37 punts/ 1266 yards/ 50+ long/ 10 inside 20
and won 1st place in TAMU punting/hang time competition in 2006, along with all district punters 05/06 District 19-3A plus All Brazos Valley Punter 2006.
Thanks again,

OK…so how do I get approved??
Hey Steven, thanks for the reply (and you are approved).
To be completely honest with you you are hitting TCU at a bad time. They took a highly-rated punter in the last class and will be short on scholarships this year so you are getting a double-whammy. Unless something drastic happens I highly doubt they have any available scholarships for a punter no matter how good.
However, the fact that they are talking to you shows you how much they respect your ability. Good luck to you next season and who knows what may happen between now and signing date.
Please keep us up to dte on how it goes with all of the schools, especially TCU.

Noticed that I’m on the 2008 list. If helpful here is more info & video link. Thanks.

Corey, very impressive video! Reminds me a lot of Cory Rodgers who was a fourth round draft pick from TCU a couple of years back. Best of luck to you as you make your choice.
Thanks. I appreciate that.
Corey, good to hear from you and you probably noticed i added your video.
Keep us updated as you go through the process if you do not mind. Thanks!
Fiesty, plan on attending TCU and camps. I’ve been receiving interest from TCU. My name is J.D. Standley Madisonville High School. I was District 19AAA First team TE unanimous. I really like TCU and would appreciate any information you have on possible TE recruiting 2008. Thanks for you time.

Hey J.D.:
Thanks for stopping by! TCU has 4 TEs on the roster and 2 graduate after this coming season. Of the two who will remain, Shea Reagan is one of the best there is and will be a JR this coming season and Evan Frosch has looked good as a RS freshman. TCU will need at least 1 TE in the next 2 classes and while not an area of immediate need with the signing of Logan Brock it would be nice to get one more this year.
TCU will uses the TE a lot and is one of the better schools for a player at that position. Watch Reagan this year!
Feisty
Feisty - thanks for adding the video. GuardianFrog - that’s one heck of compliment, thank you.
We’ll keep in touch.
Thanks for your response…attending TCU camp at Katy High School June 1..never know what the future will bring. Still getting mail which is encouraging. Also being recruited by Kansas Wesleyan and plan to visit there soon.
Have seen interest from other school here in Texas. If you have good advice on who’s looking for a punter, would appreciate any input.
Thanks, Steven
2 OL for 2008 from Los Fresnos High
6′4 285 Benavides (Ole Miss commit)
6′4 280 Atkinson Just received his first offer this week (05/28/06) from UNT.
Highlight Clip for Atkinson: http://www.teamfalcon.net/Atkinsonhighlights.html
TCU should jump on Atkinson quick.
Jerry M:
Thanks for the post and the link. You do a great job promoting the players and hope they appreciate the efforts.
Is Atkinson interested in TCU?
Probably only 2 OL in this class so finding him a place at TCU would be difficult. He looks like he could be a good one!
I came across this website and I appreciate being put on your list for linebackers. I was a little caught off guard by this because I haven’t recieved information from TCU in a while but would love to start again! You say that you need a linebacker and if you still need one from the class of 08 that has 4.6 speed and has good knowledge of the position then I would love to hear more from you guys.
Feisty,,,LB Trevor Sparks had 183 tackles last year with 63A Graham steers, GHS also implemented the I half way through the season and Trevor had a great year at the FB position also, Went to TCU camp last week and had a great visit. Hope to hear more from TCU.
Thanks for the information on Trevor and will update his listing.
Keep us informed!
I’m just curious for those recriuts and family members stopping by, what do y’all think of the new indoor practice facility and other campus construction?
What do you think of the Yogi kid. Just looking at his highlight film he looks like the real deal. Why is he rated so low. Compared to MJ and Andy his highlight is far more impressive. I knoe everyone looks good on highlight films but this kid looks great. What the biggest knoks on him? Why is he only a 2 star? I’m looking at a 5 star!
John:
Yogi looks like he has the tools, but his stats belie something else. Irving is not the best QB program so that is working against him and I think he will do much better once he gets to FW. We shall see, but lots of legit doubts on him however everyone who has close contact with him really rave about his skills and potential.
With the our QB situation looking somewhat tenuous
will we attempt to recruit a JC QB as a safeguard or
will we simply go into the 2008 season hoping our
current QB will be adequate?
Pure Purple:
Good question. One of the points I made in the What Could Go Wrong post before the season was turnovers by the young QBs. Has that been a disaster this year or what? Not just Ints, but fumbles and by both QBs.
I’ve had press Taylor on the list for a while and his name seems to be popping up more and more. Another name is terrance Cain, RSFR QB at Blinn who played at North Shore. He may elect to leave early if the grades are right.
If the mistakes by these young QBs continue you would have to think they would pull in someone from the JUCO ranks.

Thanks for the link to the story! Good stuff and very happy things have worked out for you and your son. Congrats and here is hoping he gets that free ride!
have yu looked at OL Brock Wempa out of royse city,TX 6-4 280 5.0 40
Have not looked at Brock and thanks for the heads up. Looks like a great prospect and was all-state as a soph. Will add him to the list and keep us informed on how the recruiting goes!
Tough year for OL recruits who want to go to TCU however. Lots of interest and only two spots.
Adam Lambert, OT/DE from Boyd High School made the 2007 All-District Offensive Tackle and 2007 All-District Defensive End. He also just found out he had the honor of being on the 2007 All-Wise County Team. I just wanted you to know so you can update his information on here. He also has a new Senior Highlight Tape. It should be up soon on Texas Prep soon. Thanks,
Adam Lambert was named the 2007 All-Wise County Lineman of the Year.
