Kickers/Punters

Posted on January 13, 2007

I know it is late in the recruiting season to discuss a lot of this, but decided it needed to be done.  The next week or so I will work up from my list by position to cover who may be left on the board for the Horned Frogs.  Next season TCU will return punter Derek Wash and kicker Chris Manfredini, however both will be seniors.  Kick-offs and long field goals had been handled by Peter LoCoco and this spring Garrett Milliken & Zach Walters will battle to see who replaces  LoCoco for those duties.  TCU has looked at several kickers at both positions and with the two graduating seniors next year it may be key to the future to bring someone on board early.

Punters:   Anson Kelton of Aledo is a Rice commit, but with the coaching changes he may be available.  Kelton is big at 6-4/250 and is trained by noted specialist Rocky Willingham.  2nd Team All-State as a punter as well as first team All-Region as both a punter and defensive end. In 2006 he averaged 47.3 yard per kick with a 42.6 net, a long of 70 yards and 11 of the 25 were inside the 20.

Others:

Gunter Elenburg of Jacksboro, 6-2/190 also played WR

Erick Fox, Edcouch-Elsa, 6-0, 265. 45.3 avg, long 59. 5 punts inside 20-yard line, 2nd team All-State 4A

Dustin Schulte 5-10/155 Nazareth Texas A First Team AP Class 1A All-State selection after averaging 45.2 yards on 15 punts, with five inside the 20.

Kickers: Justin Putnam from Westwood (5-11/165) is 1st Team Dave Campbell All-Texas, 5A 1st Team All-State and ranked 31st in the nation (all classes).  46 of 46 on PATs and 9 of 12 on Fgs with a long of 47 yards.

Jaime Fernandez (6-1/240) of Lufkin .  2005 First Team 5A All-State selection as a junior.  kicks the ball high and gets kick-offs into the endzone, made 45 PATs and has a long of 48 yards.

Others:

Spencer Covey Coppell

Derek Depasquale The Woodlands

Marcus Reyes 6′2 190 Allen (made several game winning field goals)

Coach Gary Patterson rarely gives scholarships to incoming freshman kickers, however this may be a year where he goes against his past history, especially with 8 to 10 scholarships available for positions that are not immediate needs.

I haven’t seen Garrett Milliken or Zach Walters play…, what would you say of them?

Walters was highly regarded coming out of HS and was a preffered walk-on. Neither have played in a game for TCU so hard to judge.

Mrs. FroggieWoggie wonders if Kelton will be used for fake punts; something we’ve almost never seen at TCU (been watching for a few years)

Kelton could be a threat on short yardage!
